AEO Australia Answer Engine Optimisation

Ready to take it a step further?

Let's start talking about your project or idea and find out how Creato can help your business grow.

AEO website design means building a website that clearly answers customer questions and makes its information accessible to search systems. For Australian businesses, the useful work starts with specific service pages, credible evidence and a website that search engines can access.

That matters when a potential customer asks Google or an AI assistant to compare providers, explain a service or help shortlist a business. Your website should give them enough information to understand whether you are suitable, and enough evidence to check your claims.

Here is what to include in an AEO website brief, how to improve an existing site and when a redesign makes sense.

What is the difference between AEO, GEO and SEO

SEO, or search engine optimisation, covers improving your website's visibility in search. Answer engine optimisation, usually shortened to AEO, focuses on answering questions in ways that can support search answers. Generative engine optimisation, or GEO, focuses on visibility within AI-generated responses, including business mentions and source links.

These terms overlap. Agencies also use them differently, so ask what work a proposal actually includes.

Google's guidance on generative AI search says its AI features use core Search ranking and quality systems. From Google's perspective, improving visibility in these experiences is still SEO.

For a business owner, the practical question is whether your website gives customers useful answers and provides reliable information that search systems can find.

Describe your business before making a broad brand statement

Start with a clear description of what you do, who you help and where you operate. This belongs near the top of relevant pages, where visitors can quickly judge whether they have found the right business.

Consider a hypothetical renovation company. A homepage that opens with “Reimagining spaces, redefining possibilities” leaves several questions unanswered. Does it design kitchens, build commercial interiors or sell furniture?

A more useful opening would be:

We renovate kitchens and bathrooms for homeowners across Sydney's Northern Beaches, managing the project from design through to installation.

The business can still use a distinctive headline and strong photography. The factual description gives that design context.

Apply the same principle to each service page. A page about bathroom renovations should explain that service specifically, including the project types and locations the business genuinely supports.

Build service pages around decisions customers need to make

A page that lists a service and ends with “Contact us for a quote” gives a buyer very little to work with. Use questions from enquiry emails, sales calls and proposals to decide what the page should explain.

A useful service page normally covers:

  • Suitability: who the service is for and which situations it handles.

  • Scope: what is included, what is optional and what the customer supplies.

  • Cost: published pricing where possible, or the factors that change a quote.

  • Process: the main stages and decisions the customer will make.

  • Timing: realistic delivery expectations and what can cause delays.

  • Evidence: relevant projects, qualifications and customer feedback.

For Australian readers, identify prices as AUD and make the GST treatment clear. If travel, installation or ongoing fees affect the total, explain those too.

Where a fixed price would mislead, describe the variables. For example, a website quote might depend on the number of page templates, copywriting, integrations and migration requirements. That helps a customer understand why two proposals differ without inventing a standard price.

Write enough to resolve the buying question. There is no useful reason to stretch every answer to the same length.

Give readers evidence they can inspect

Claims such as “leading provider” or “exceptional results” become more useful when the page shows what supports them.

A case study can explain the client's starting problem, the work completed and the outcome. Include original project images where you have permission, identify the people responsible and explain any meaningful constraints.

If you report a result, describe how it was measured. An increase in enquiries needs a timeframe and a comparison period. A client testimonial should remain faithful to what the client actually said.

Useful evidence does not always require a dramatic statistic. A documented design process, an explanation of a difficult technical decision or a relevant project example can help a prospect assess your experience.

For advice articles, name the author and explain their relevant role. Link factual platform claims to official documentation so readers can check the details themselves.

Make Australian locations and service areas specific

A business that serves a local market should explain that market clearly. “Australia-wide” may be accurate for a remote consultancy, but it tells a homeowner little about whether a tradesperson can visit their property.

State your genuine service areas, contact details and operating arrangements. Keep these consistent with the public profiles you maintain. For a business with several locations, make it easy to find the relevant office or team.

Location pages should help people in that location. Depending on the service, useful details could include local project examples, travel arrangements, available appointments or the team that handles the area.

Create a separate page when you have enough relevant information to justify it. Replacing a suburb name throughout the same generic text adds little for a customer who is deciding whom to contact.

Australian context also includes the language your customers use, relevant local requirements and realistic purchasing conditions. Include those details where they affect the decision.

Check that important pages are accessible

Before commissioning more content, check the pages you already want people to find.

Google's technical requirements include allowing Googlebot access, returning a successful HTTP response and providing indexable content. Ask your developer to check the homepage and key service pages for accidental indexing restrictions, access challenges and server errors.

Also review redirects, canonical URLs and internal links. These checks help identify whether the site is pointing search systems towards the intended pages.

Keep essential service information available as normal page text. A photograph of a brochure or a decorative graphic should not be the only place that explains your offering.

Modern websites can use JavaScript, animation and interactive components. The useful test is whether the important content is available to the systems you want to reach. Ask your developer to inspect what is returned when a page is fetched and use Google's URL Inspection tool to review Google's view separately. One successful test does not prove access for every AI platform.

Separate search access from AI training permissions

An instruction to “allow all AI bots” is too broad for a website brief. Different bots have different purposes.

OpenAI's crawler documentation distinguishes OAI-SearchBot, which supports ChatGPT search, from GPTBot, which crawls content that may be used for model training. OpenAI says these permissions are independent: a website can allow its search bot while disallowing its training bot.

Have your developer review crawler rules against the platforms you want to support, including any restrictions imposed by hosting or security software. Make training permissions a separate business decision.

Crawler access creates an opportunity for discovery. It does not establish that your business will be selected or recommended in a particular answer.

Use structured data to describe real information

Structured data is markup that describes information on a page in a standard format. Depending on the page, this might describe the organisation, a local business or an article and its author.

It should reflect the information visitors can actually see. Google's structured data guidelines require representative, relevant markup and warn against misleading content.

Ask whoever implements it to check the details and validate the markup. A copied template with the wrong address or an invented rating introduces errors rather than clarity.

FAQs can be valuable when they resolve real customer concerns. Include them for that reason. Google says there is no special schema or AI text file required for inclusion in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Treat any claimed universal shortcut with care.

Improve the existing website or plan a redesign

Many AEO improvements are ordinary website improvements: clearer copy, stronger service pages, better evidence and corrected technical settings. If your current site lets you make those changes efficiently, start there.

A redesign becomes more useful when the existing structure creates persistent problems. Perhaps every service shares one thin page, the mobile experience makes enquiries difficult, or the content management system prevents your team from maintaining essential information.

Assess those problems together. A rebuild should have a clear business purpose and a plan for existing content, important URLs and the enquiry process.

If you are comparing proposals, ask which pages will change, what evidence will be added, how access will be checked and how results will be reviewed. Our guide to choosing a web design agency in Sydney covers the wider selection process.

Choose a manageable first month of work

Start with your highest-value service page. Clarify the opening description, answer the questions that commonly delay a purchase and add a relevant project example. Check the page's access and its path to an enquiry.

Next, review the business details across the website and the profiles you control. Correct inconsistencies and make responsibilities clear so future changes stay accurate.

Record what you changed and when. Monitor relevant search performance, enquiries and a consistent sample of AI answers over time. A single favourable response is useful to save, but repeated observations provide a better basis for deciding what to do next.

Does AEO require a particular website platform

Assess the implementation rather than the platform name. Your team needs to maintain useful content, sensible page structure, access settings and the customer journey. Those are better selection criteria than a promise that a platform automatically ranks in AI search.

Can AEO website design guarantee a ChatGPT recommendation

No. A provider can improve and verify parts of your website, but cannot control every response an external AI system produces. Ask for specific deliverables and evidence of the work completed.
