Ready to take it a step further?
Let's start talking about your project or idea and find out how Creato can help your business grow.
Creato’s free SEO audit costs $0. For a detailed paid review, request a quote based on your website, the questions you need answered and the deliverables you will receive. Keep the cost of implementing the findings separate unless it is expressly included.
An automated scan, an expert review of a small service website and an investigation into a large online store cover different work. Before setting a budget, establish which job you need. A price is only comparable when the coverage is clear.
This guide explains what changes the cost, what to ask for in a proposal and how to avoid paying for a report that leaves your team unsure what to do next.

Compare scope and deliverables rather than treating every SEO audit as the same product.
What are you paying for in an SEO audit
The cost should reflect the investigation and the usefulness of its output. A tool can collect page data quickly. Checking which findings matter, tracing their causes and turning them into workable recommendations requires a different level of effort.
Separate the following types of work when discussing a quote so you can choose the level of investigation your business needs.
A free automated scan
A scan can identify issues its checks are designed to detect, such as missing page elements or broken links. It can provide an initial list to investigate, especially when you do not yet know where to start.
Its limits depend on the tool and its access. It may inspect only one page, sample the site or report a warning without establishing whether it affects your important customer journeys. A score does not tell you which service your business should prioritise.
A focused expert review
A narrower review investigates a defined question. Why are the main service pages difficult to find? What needs attention before a redesign? Is a reported technical issue real, and which pages does it affect?
The value comes from checking the evidence and giving you a clear answer within the agreed boundary. A focused review can be more appropriate than commissioning a broad audit when the immediate decision is already known.
A comprehensive website audit
A broader audit may cover technical access, site structure, search performance, priority content and the route from search to enquiry. Larger sites can also require specialist checks of product categories, filtering, multiple markets or rendering.
The proposal should say which areas will be examined, how much of the site will be covered and what remains outside scope. “Comprehensive” needs a definition.
Start with Creato’s free SEO audit
Creato’s SEO service page offers a free SEO audit, with a form requesting your website and email address for the report. That gives you a clear starting point before discussing further work.
If you need a particular question answered, tell us. You might be preparing for a website redesign, concerned about a fall in enquiries or unsure which service page deserves attention first.
For a deeper investigation, we will agree the scope before any paid work begins. That keeps the next step focused on your priorities, with clear expectations about the analysis and implementation involved.
What changes the cost of a detailed audit
The number of distinct page types
Page volume matters, but so does variety. Fifty similar service pages can share a common problem. A smaller site with bookings, location pages, a resource library and custom forms may need more separate checks.
Ask whether the review covers the full website, a sample of pages or selected templates. A crawl of every URL is different from a manual review of every page.
The problem being investigated
A general starting assessment is different from diagnosing a decline after a website migration. The latter may require historical URL lists, deployment dates, redirects and search data to reconstruct what changed.
Supply a short timeline of known changes. It helps direct attention towards evidence rather than speculation.
The available data and access
Public pages show only part of the picture. Search Console and analytics may help explain discovery, visits and recorded enquiries. If tracking is missing or unreliable, the audit should state that limitation rather than invent a baseline.
For an initial audit, Google recommends giving the reviewer read access to Search Console rather than permission to make changes. Use account invitations instead of emailing passwords.
The markets and services in scope
A local service business, a national supplier and a multilingual store have different research needs. Specify the actual services, locations and audiences you want assessed. More markets should mean a meaningful addition to the investigation, not simply more place names in the report.
The depth of the recommendations
A list of issues takes less explanation than a plan your developer and writer can act on. Ask whether the report includes affected URLs, supporting evidence, suggested fixes, dependencies and a way to check completion.
A review meeting, implementation support and a follow-up check can also change the scope. Have them listed rather than assuming they come with the report.
What a useful paid audit should leave you with
Use these points to discuss the deliverables you need. The purpose is a manageable work plan, not the longest possible document.
A defined starting point. The business goals, website sections, markets and data reviewed, including anything unavailable.
Evidence for the findings. Relevant URLs, examples or screenshots, with observations separated from hypotheses.
Priorities with reasons. An explanation of which problems deserve attention first and which can wait.
Actions that can be assigned. A specific task for a developer, content owner or other responsible person.
Implementation boundaries. What is covered by the audit fee and what needs another quote.
Verification steps. How the team will check a fix and what needs longer-term observation.
For example, imagine a hypothetical ten-page consultancy website. Its key service page is unintentionally marked noindex. An actionable finding would identify the page, show the directive, confirm that the page is intended for public search, specify the approved change and set out the recheck. That is more useful than a broad instruction to “improve technical SEO”.
It also separates completion from outcome. Removing an unintended restriction can be verified; a particular ranking or number of enquiries cannot be promised as the automatic result.
Why a high SEO score is not enough
Automated checks have defined boundaries. For instance, Google’s Lighthouse documentation says its meta-description check detects whether a description is missing or empty; it does not judge the quality of that description.
A page can pass that check while describing the service poorly. Conversely, a tool can flag an issue that is not the most important task for your business.
Google also explains that third-party SEO tools do not have access to its internal ranking data. Treat their findings as evidence to evaluate, not a guaranteed forecast of search performance.
Ask what the finding changes for a prospective customer and whether the recommendation is supported. That keeps the budget focused on useful work.
Budget for the fixes as well as the report
Keep three amounts separate when comparing proposals.
The audit fee. Research, analysis, report preparation and any agreed explanation of the findings.
The implementation cost. Approved development, content or other changes needed to address the priorities.
The verification cost. Checking the changes and reviewing the relevant data afterwards, where this is separately scoped.
Some proposals bundle parts of that work. Others stop at the report. Count each inclusion once and ask what additional approval is needed before any paid work begins.
Compare quotes against the same checklist
Total payable. Is the quote in Australian dollars, is GST included and is the fee fixed or based on an allowance?
Coverage. Which website, page types, services and markets will be reviewed? What is sampled or excluded?
Analysis. Who interprets the findings, which data will they use and what access is required?
Handover. Do you receive a prioritised report, a walkthrough and tasks that your team can implement?
Extra work. Are fixes, further review rounds and verification included or separately quoted?
If your budget is limited, tell Creato what you can realistically implement. A focused investigation followed by a small set of completed improvements may be a more useful brief than a broad report with no budget left to act.
How Creato connects search findings with the website
Creato brings search strategy, content and design into the same discussion. Our SEO approach for Australian businesses starts with the services and audiences that matter, then considers the website structure, relevant content and route to enquiry.
That is useful when the problem crosses disciplines. A service page may be discoverable but fail to explain who the service suits. A navigation label may be technically crawlable yet confusing to a visitor. A redesign may need search requirements considered before layouts are approved.
Bring us your URL and the business problem. We can discuss what needs investigating and what work should be scoped next, without treating every tool warning as a separate project.
SEO audit cost questions
Does a free SEO audit replace a paid audit
It depends on the question and the coverage. A free report can provide a useful starting point. A complex migration, persistent technical problem or large website may need a separately scoped investigation. Ask what has actually been checked.
Does an audit include fixing the website
Only when the proposal says so. Confirm which changes are included, who approves them and how they will be tested. Do not assume a report fee includes development or copywriting.
Do I need an ongoing SEO contract to get an audit
An audit and ongoing SEO are different scopes. Ask whether the proposal is a standalone engagement, part of an ongoing service or a credited first step. Check any conditions before comparing the price.
Can an audit guarantee first place on Google
No. Google’s guidance on hiring an SEO warns against first-place guarantees. A useful audit can establish problems, opportunities and the work involved. Results still depend on more than completion of a checklist.
