Ready to take it a step further?
Let's start talking about your project or idea and find out how Creato can help your business grow.
SEO for AI means improving your website and public business information so AI search tools can find and use them when people ask relevant questions. For an Australian business, the aim is to appear during a customer's research, explain why your service suits their needs, and make the next step easy.
You might already pay for Google SEO and wonder whether ChatGPT requires something completely different. Or you might have a website that looks fine, but says very little about what customers actually need to know.
Start with the information customers need before choosing you. Explain your services clearly, give people useful reasons to trust you, and make sure your website supports an enquiry. This guide explains what that work involves and where professional help can make a difference.
What SEO for AI actually means. Let's get techical.
SEO stands for search engine optimisation. It is the work of helping a website appear when someone searches for something relevant to the business.
AI search adds another way for people to discover you. A customer can ask ChatGPT for a shortlist of suppliers, ask Google an involved question and receive an AI answer, or use another assistant to compare options. These tools can draw on web information and include links to their sources.
You may hear the work called AI SEO, AI search optimisation, answer engine optimisation (AEO) or generative engine optimisation (GEO). Providers use these labels differently, so ask what their service actually includes.
Also check the meaning of "AI SEO" when comparing offers. Some services use AI software to carry out SEO tasks. Others concentrate on your business appearing in AI answers. Those are different objectives, even when a provider offers both.
How a customer might find your business
Imagine a Melbourne business owner looking for a new website. They could ask an AI assistant:
I run a small landscaping business in Melbourne. What should I look for in a website designer, and which Australian agencies should I compare?
The person has supplied their business type, location and buying problem. They may then ask whether they need online bookings, how much a website might cost, and what to prepare before requesting a quote.
A website that only says "beautiful websites for ambitious brands" gives that buyer little to evaluate. A page explaining the types of businesses served, relevant projects, what a project includes and how enquiries work is more useful.
This example illustrates the opportunity. Your content should help someone decide whether you belong on their shortlist. Appearing in an AI answer is one possible way they reach that decision; your website still needs to help them take it further.
Does your existing SEO still matter
Yes. Google's official AI search guidance says its AI features build on existing Search systems and that established SEO practices remain relevant. You do not need to abandon the work that helps your business appear in Google.
However, Google visibility and ChatGPT visibility are different outcomes. Being first in one Google search does not establish that ChatGPT will recommend you for a related question. Review the questions customers ask across both channels while keeping the useful parts of your existing marketing.
Before adding another monthly service, ask your current provider which website problems they are already addressing and what extra work an AI search package would deliver.
Start with the services you want to sell
Choose one or two services that matter most commercially. A busy business owner rarely needs to begin by publishing articles about every possible topic in their industry.
For each priority service, read the page as though you know nothing about the business. Can you tell who it is for, what is included, where it is available and how to proceed?
Consider a fictional Sydney cleaning company. "Professional cleaning solutions" is vague. A description such as "We provide scheduled office cleaning for small businesses in Sydney's Inner West, including evening visits and ongoing maintenance plans" gives a potential customer something specific to assess. The company should only publish that description if it accurately reflects its service.
Specific information also helps filter enquiries. If you work on commercial projects but do not accept residential jobs, say so. If you serve a particular region, explain that region. If consultations happen remotely across Australia, make that arrangement clear.
This work is especially useful when a business has changed over time. Your website may still describe the clients, services or locations you focused on several years ago.
Help people choose before they request a quote
Good content reduces the uncertainty that stops someone making contact. Think about the questions you hear in sales calls, emails and meetings.
For a service business, useful answers often explain:
What the customer receives and what falls outside the scope.
What affects the price and what information is needed for a quote.
How the work proceeds and what the customer needs to prepare.
Which option suits a particular problem or business size.
You do not have to publish a fixed price when every job is different. You can explain the factors that affect it. A renovation business might discuss access, project size, materials and the condition of the existing property. A designer might explain how page count, online selling and custom functionality affect the scope.
Put the answer where the customer expects it. Information about a particular service usually belongs on that service page. An article is useful when the question needs a fuller explanation or a comparison.
Use ordinary language your clients understand. Describe what happens and what it means for them. A paragraph packed with industry terms can be technically correct while leaving a buyer unsure whether you can help.
Give customers evidence they can evaluate
Your business experience is a valuable source of content. A short account of a completed project can explain a customer's problem, the work you carried out and the outcome they received.
Make the details meaningful. A supplier saying it has "years of experience" gives less information than a project showing how it handled a difficult brief, an unusual installation or a specific type of customer.
Use real photographs where appropriate, identify the work accurately, and obtain permission before naming a client or sharing their details. If you report a result, keep evidence for it. Do not invent a percentage improvement to make a project sound more impressive.
Reviews can help customers assess your service too. Ask for honest feedback and keep the original meaning when displaying it. Independent mentions, professional memberships and awards can provide useful context when they are relevant and verifiable. Treat these as evidence of your business, rather than a guaranteed formula for appearing in an AI answer.
What you can do yourself and when to get help
You do not need to understand website code to make a useful contribution. You know which customers you serve, which questions delay a sale and which projects demonstrate your work.
Gather that information in a document. Include current services, service areas, common questions, approved testimonials and examples of completed jobs. Check your public listings for old phone numbers, broken website links and outdated descriptions.
For eligible local businesses, keeping a Google Business Profile complete and accurate also supports Google local search. That is a worthwhile channel in its own right; it does not establish a direct ChatGPT ranking rule.
An agency or developer can then turn your material into useful pages and check the things you cannot see simply by opening the website. For example, they can confirm whether search systems can reach important pages and whether the site's settings prevent those pages appearing in search.
Ask for an explanation in business terms: which pages need attention, why the change matters, and what will be delivered. A recommendation to improve a service page should identify the missing information, rather than just promise to "optimise it for AI".
Make the website useful after someone finds you
An AI mention does not complete a sale. Someone who follows a link still needs to recognise the business, understand the offer and feel comfortable making contact.
Open your site on your phone. Find a priority service, look for evidence of the work, and try the enquiry process. A confusing menu or a form that asks for information the buyer cannot yet provide can interrupt an otherwise promising visit.
Design matters here. Clear headings, readable text and relevant project images make information easier to use. A consistent visual identity helps visitors recognise the same business across its website and other materials. Good looks should support a clear explanation of the service.
If those foundations are missing, Creato's website design and development services are a practical option. Our work brings website strategy, page structure, design and on-page SEO foundations together, with a focus on turning visits into enquiries. We also provide logo and graphic design for businesses improving their wider brand presentation.
A manageable way to begin
Use the first month to complete a small, useful body of work:
Choose a priority service and define the enquiries you want more of.
Collect the customer questions and project evidence relevant to it.
Improve the service page and check that the enquiry route works on mobile.
Ask your provider to check search access, then record a few relevant AI search answers as a starting point.
There is no universal deadline for an AI recommendation. Review what has changed over time, including the accuracy of answers, relevant website visits and actual enquiries. Ask new customers how they found you; analytics alone may miss people who saw your name in an answer and contacted you later.
Common questions about SEO for AI
Do I need a completely new website
That depends on the condition of your current site. A website that is easy to update and already explains your business well may need focused improvements. If the structure makes key information difficult to find or maintain, discuss whether a redesign would solve those problems.
Can I use ChatGPT to write all my content
It can help organise notes or draft an outline. You still need to supply the facts, check the advice and add details from your business. A page that could describe any competitor gives a customer little reason to choose you.
How much should I spend on AI SEO
Compare the work included in each proposal. Improving a few pages, rebuilding a website and running an ongoing content programme involve different costs. Request a defined scope, a clear explanation of reporting and a reason for each ongoing activity.
Can an agency guarantee I will appear in AI answers
Treat placement guarantees cautiously. OpenAI says ChatGPT search placement is not guaranteed. An agency can commit to agreed work and reporting, but it cannot control every answer a customer receives.
